THERAPIST OF THE MONTH
David Brannon
Never could I ever imagine how this job would be the most gratifying experience In my entire life of employment. Working with special needs children can make you more aware of their plight in everyday society. It might help you not just at the moment but in many future moments to come. You're likely to encounter an adult in a wheelchair, or with a personality disorder, at some time in your life and this experience has me now at an advantage point to better understand the entire spectrum. I honesty wakeup looking forward in going to work and seeing the children in the classroom.
I feel as though Looking Glass has giving me the opportunity to see both sides of the spectrum. In my first year of employment, my client did not have a volatile disposition however there was other challenges that kept me on my feet. That has change with my present client. I had often questioned myself if I could really handle such an aggressive child or make a difference but I have found in this experience, working with kids can be one of the most challenging, yet rewarding experiences. As you care for and teach children, you build strong bonds that will stay with you forever. Making an impact on their lives, helping them grow and learn about the world around them, helps them to become more trusting and confident. I mean this kid is just amazing individual and some of the issues he was having are almost non-existent. From running away from me, now to running to me, makes all the difference.
I am the opportunity to be a part of their growth and provide a safe and nurturing space and change lives and accomplishing that is what drives me to be present each and every morning. Communication, Behavioral management, Patience and Creativity are the golden tickets to gaining successful outcome. All children will test boundaries, and so will adults for that matter. I have found being Flexible and keeping things Simplistic and knowing it's ok to ask for help but also understanding the child's emotions will be temporary, for this too shall pass. Take a deep breath tell yourself tomorrow is another day. If I can give one take away from this it is… You need to be a confident and authoritative communicator with the ability to talk to children on their level.
Excellent listening skills are also crucial. Enthusiasm - you need to really like children and enjoy spending time with them and to have real enthusiasm for your job, because kids can spot insincerity a mile off. I absolutely love my job and thats exactly the energy your client and students should feel.
